Hugo Anecdote
The rising sun broke the darkness in my room. My eyelids gave into the sunlight crashing in upon them. As they slowly opened, a beautiful sight met my gaze. The beautiful city landscape of Chicago, Illinois through my window. I didn’t let this distract me though, I had a busy day ahead of me. I moved the bedsheets out of my way and walked downstairs. I expectantly turned the corner towards the kitchen and I saw my two wonderful parents in the midst of cooking a breakfast feast. The warm smell of toast, eggs and bacon cleansed my existence, it felt like a clean slate: a fresh start to the day. My parents invited me to the table, thinking nothing of it, I went and assumed my usual position: at the end of the breakfast bar. My mother slid my plate in front of me, I felt the saliva collecting in my mouth, it looked delicious. The scrambled eggs, well-cooked sausage, the sizzling bacon and the buttery toast: to say they looked appetizing would be an understatement. Before I could dig into my meal, we held a brief grace: thanking God for blessing us with another day, and our beautiful, loving family. As I dug into my delicious meal my parents started the conversation: asking me about my sleep. Being distracted by the taste of my savoury meal my response was delayed, until a witty “it was utterly marvelous” left the confines of my lips. They both chuckled, then told me that they loved me. I smiled back at them and continued scooping the eggs into my mouth. Little did I know that this would be one of the last blissful moments I would experience for a while.
